UMKC POLISCI-210

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

There are to be no laws to mandate any said religion and any one U.S. Citizen my worship any religion he/she chooses bound by the Free Exercise Clause; this right of free speaking or printing (with the exceptions of few: politicians & celebrities) and gathering/protesting without compromising these said rights of other U.S. citizens are to remain intact and given to each citizen of the United States of America. Citizens are also given the choice to bring petition to attention of whom it may concern regarding issues against the ruling government. Each right is also determined by the U.S. Supreme Court Justice system; something remains in the bounds of the Constitution by what outcome the Supreme Court deems.

In the matter of [free speech/print] one U.S. Citizen may not commit the following:
  • Defamatory/inflammatory speech- false speaking that has malicious intent and is meant to harm and or damage a reputation of any one person
    a.k.a. slander (libel being printed)
  • Hate speech- speech likely to inflict any emotional pain/trauma whilst promoting criminal acts
  • True threats-intimidation
  • Copyright Infringement
  • False advertisement
  • Indecency
  • Pornography

It was discussed during the class period about the topic of polygamy in mormon religion. We were asked why a man wanting to be married to more than one person was an act that violated another's rights; that it was imposing its religion. My comment to this is this: how is it not imposing one's religion of not marrying more than one person or not marrying at all or marrying same sex? It still coincides with their belief system, and because of the Free Exercise Clause, should this not be a matter that is to be of the personal business of the one upon the act? Is it not imposing a standard one-spouse relationship status because that is what a majority of a Christian society tells us is right? And what of the same sex couples? They don't believe in Christian values. They could believe in Paganism, a practice of "witchcraft" or even be Atheists. How is saying that one is going to Hell no imposing their religious beliefs onto the U.S. citizens, yet it is posted on peoples' lips, on their phones, walls, etc. They are teaching newer generations that "saying" you have a freedom of religion, really means that you have a freedom to believe what you want, so long as I can shove a Holy Spirit down your throat until you recant and repent. Is that not intolerable?
There's a quote from a song called "Unleash your Words": Speak your mind go straight to hell. That's essentially true. To me, there is nothing in this life that is free including freedom. It's a pretty word on paper but no one really has an absolute freedom because somehow, somewhere, you are going to offend someone with your opinion on any subject matter regarding the freedom of speech. The same in the manner of the imposing religious beliefs I talked about earlier. There will never be a case where you can appease every single person around you. You're going to do something they won't like. That's just a truth of being human. I agree with this statement in this video that to protect our own rights [deemed a birthright], one must protect the rights of our neighbors even if they do not match our own views. The power of one must become a power of all so that equality can happen. The problem though, is that people, are proud and greedy and want things the way they themselves want it. Many times, it is because one does not fully understand that which they fear so much. Many will not listen to issues of a person because they do not agree with their practices. Such as scientology.People can't stand the thought of letting people be and stay out of business that is not their own, such as one's sexual preference or what sexual practices they do like those in a fetish relationship; many think them abominations of society because their private domestic life has to be on the topic of gossip on every lady's lips at the hair salon. It is human nature to cause an uproar simply because one gets bored with the standings of current affairs of "peace." War is more exciting and sells more papers. People just cannot let people be.
